"Chilling Results in Tucson, Scardino Wins"
|
With an economy getting tougher, sky
rocketing fuel costs , and a mothers day
holiday, CIFCA rolled into SIR in Tucson,
AZ, for SIR's Funny Car Fever event.
The conditions were extremely hot in
Tucson. The teams were trying to catch
current points leader AMP Motorsports
who could not show due to family
commitments. Therefore we were
guaranteed to see a new points leader
leaving Tucson.
Chill Scardino and Becky Sylvester both
tested the nigh before and boy did it pay
off. Scardino after a strong final round
showing at the season opener in
Sacramento, was able to grab the # 1
qualifying spot. Sylvester was able to
grab the # 2 spot as well as the Cogswell
Marine & Motorsports Revolving qualifier
award for the second straight race. Dan
Levitte Jr. in James Boettcher's Wild
Child did an awesome 600 foot burnout
to grab the Perma Cool Burnout
Challenge.
The first round of eliminations was a
weird and abnormal round. Defending
Series Champion Jeff Tildahl faced
Becky Sylvester in the opening. The
champ struggled a bit in qualifying,
however was given a first round gift
when Sylvester rolled through the stage
beam before the tree was activated.

Tildahl went on to run a 7.60. Jim Boettcher's cars had the honor of facing each other
in the opening round. Mike Boettcher driving the Wild Thing and Dan Levitte driving the
Wild Child were set to square off. Boettcher broke and Levitte received a single. Levitte
cut a .012 light to pick up the Enderle quick reaction Award. Scardino was able to run a
7.57 to take care of Jim Maroney's 8.52. Mike Halstead and Jim Carter also advanced
when their competition both broke on the burnout.
The second round found Chill Scardino losing to Jim Carter in a great match with a pair
of 7.52's, however the race was won at the tree with when Carter cut a .055 to
Scardino's .085. Scardino would return as the quick loser for the semi's. Tony Doca
received a competition single when Mike Halstead developed a oil leak after the
burnout. Jeff Tildahl advanced when Dan Levitte red light.
The semi's pitted Carter and Scardino in a rematch from the second round and Tildahl
and Doca in the other pair. Tildahl cut an .022 light and then ran a 7.504 to defeat Doca
and also pick up the Good Vibrations best package award. In the a reversal of fortune
Scardino strapped a .032 light to Carter's .184 light and forced Carter to breakout with
a 7.43 to Scardino 7.57.
The finals pitted a clutch car vs a converter car. Tildahl got the slight jump out of the
hole with an .026 to a .039 light however both car's broke out. Tildahl was worse than
Scardino and Scardino picked up the win in a double break out. Scardino ran a 7.48 to
Tildahl's 7.47.
